Awareness-building Campaign on First Nations Education
The FNEC was founded in 1985 at the request of education representatives. It represents a total of 22 member communities from eight First Nations: Abenaki, Algonquin, Atikamekw, Huron-Wendat, Malecite, Micmac, Mohawk and a single Innu community, Mashteuiatsh.
Sixteen of the communities represented by the FNEC administer a total of 26 band schools. Here are a few facts about these schools:
- Several have to teach two second languages.
- Only six offer all cycles of secondary school.
- Five offer the first cycle of secondary school only.
- Four offer only the elementary level.
- One school only offers the first cycle of elementary school.
