Awareness-building Campaign on First Nations Education

The FNEC was founded in 1985 at the request of education representatives. It represents a total of 22 member communities from eight First Nations: Abenaki, Algonquin, Atikamekw, Huron-Wendat, Malecite, Micmac, Mohawk and a single Innu community, Mashteuiatsh.

Sixteen of the communities represented by the FNEC administer a total of 26 band schools. Here are a few facts about these schools:


      • Several have to teach two second languages.
      • Only six offer all cycles of secondary school.
      • Five offer the first cycle of secondary school only.
      • Four offer only the elementary level.
      • One school only offers the first cycle of elementary school.

    In 2006-2007 the student population of the FNEC member communities is divided up as follows:

By level there is a total of:

  • 754 students in preschool (12.7%)

  • 2,755 in elementary school (46%)

  • 2,472 in high school (41.3%)

  • Total: 5,981 students


By type of school the students are represented as follows:

In band schools: 4,520 students (75.6%)

  • 703 students in preschool

  • 2,268 students in elementary school

  • 1,549 students in high school

In provincial schools: 1,184 students (19.8%)

  • 49 students in preschool

  • 387 students in elementary school

  • 748 students in high school

In private schools: 277 students (4.6%)

  • 2 students in preschool

  • 100 students in elementary school

  • 175 students in high school
